What Is a Jyotirlinga? (Simple Story)
Long ago, two gods — Brahma and Vishnu — had a big fight. Both said, "I am the biggest god."
To stop the fight, Shiva turned into a huge pillar of fire. This fire had no end — no top and no bottom.
Shiva said, "Whoever finds the end of this fire is the biggest god."
Vishnu went down to find the end but could not. He told the truth: "I could not find it."
Brahma went up to find the end. He also could not find it. But he lied and said, "I found it!"
Shiva knew Brahma was lying. So Shiva said, "Because you lied, no one will build temples for you." This is why we hardly see any Brahma temples in India today.
This story is why Shiva is worshipped as light — a Jyotirlinga.
Every Shiva temple has a linga (the shape used for worship). But a Jyotirlinga is special. People believe it did not come from a human hand — it appeared on its own. In Sanskrit, this is called "swayambhu," which means "made by itself."
Jyotirlinga vs Shakti Peeth — What Is the Difference?
People often mix up two words — Jyotirlinga and Shakti Peeth. They are not the same thing.
- Jyotirlinga = a place where Shiva appeared as light. There are 12 of them.
- Shakti Peeth = a place where a body part of Goddess Sati fell from the sky. There are 51 (some say 52 or 108).
Varanasi (Kashi) has both a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peeth in the same city. That is one reason Kashi is believed to be extra powerful.
The Famous Prayer (Stotram)
There is a small prayer with just 2 lines. It has all 12 names inside it. People say this prayer every Monday, and during Shravan month — the rainy season month that Shiva devotees love the most.
You do not need to learn this prayer in Sanskrit. Just remember the list of 12 names given above. That is enough for your trip.
All 12 Jyotirlingas — Story, Timing & Best Time to Visit
1. Somnath Jyotirlinga — Gujarat
The Moon God (Chandra) was cursed by his father-in-law. He lost his shine and glow.
Chandra prayed to Shiva at this place. Shiva removed the curse. That is why the moon now grows and shrinks every month, but never disappears forever.
To thank Shiva, Chandra built the very first Somnath temple, made of gold.
Fun fact: This temple was broken by attackers many times in history. But people rebuilt it again and again. That is why it is also called "the temple that never dies."

That is why Shiva is called "Mahakal" here, which means the one who is bigger than time and death itself.

8. Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga — Nashik, Maharashtra

9. Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga — Deoghar, Jharkhand
This is called the "healing" temple. Ravana once pleased Shiva so much that Shiva agreed to move to Lanka with him.
But the gods tricked Ravana into putting the Shivling down on the ground at Deoghar, and it got stuck there forever.
In another version of the story, Shiva became a doctor (called "Vaidya") to heal Ravana. That is why this temple is named Vaidyanath.

Her jealous co-wife killed Kusuma's son out of envy. But because of Kusuma's strong faith, Shiva brought her son back to life.

It is much easier to visit them in small groups, like this:
- Group 1 (Maharashtra): Bhimashankar + Trimbakeshwar + Grishneshwar — 4 to 5 days
- Group 2 (Madhya Pradesh): Mahakaleshwar + Omkareshwar — 2 days
- Group 3 (Gujarat): Somnath + Nageshwar + Dwarka — 3 days
- Group 4 (Uttarakhand): Kedarnath alone — only from April to November
- Group 5 (Uttar Pradesh): Kashi Vishwanath + Ayodhya + Prayagraj — 3 to 4 days
- Group 6 (South India): Mallikarjuna + Rameshwaram — 4 to 5 days
Best overall time to visit most temples: October to March. Try to avoid July-August (Shravan month) if you don't like big crowds, since this is the busiest time of the year.
