Uttar Pradesh has a rich and influential music and dance heritage, deeply rooted in classical traditions, devotional practices, and folk culture. The state has played a major role in shaping Indian classical music and dance, and continues to be a cultural center for performers and learners.

Classical Music Traditions
Uttar Pradesh is closely associated with Hindustani classical music, especially through the Gharana system. Renowned gharanas such as the Gwalior, Banaras, and Lucknow gharanas have contributed immensely to vocal and instrumental music. Forms like Dhrupad, Khayal, Thumri, Dadra, and Tappa flourished here. The Banaras gharana is especially famous for its expressive style and devotional depth.

Folk and Devotional Music
The state has a strong tradition of folk music, which reflects everyday life, seasons, and emotions of the people. Popular folk forms include Birha, Kajri, Chaiti, Alha, Sohar, and Nirgun bhajans. Qawwalis and ghazals, influenced by Sufi culture, are also an important part of Uttar Pradesh’s musical heritage, especially in cities like Lucknow and Allahabad.

Dance Forms
Uttar Pradesh is the birthplace of Kathak, one of India’s most graceful classical dance forms. Kathak originated in the temples of the region and later evolved in royal courts. It is known for storytelling through expressions, rhythmic footwork, and elegant spins. The Lucknow and Banaras Kathak gharanas are particularly famous for their distinct styles.
Apart from Kathak, Raslila is widely performed in the Braj region, depicting the divine life of Lord Krishna through dance and drama.
