Gupt Godavari Caves
The Gupt Godavari Caves are a pair of natural limestone caves a short drive from Chitrakoot town, linked in legend to Ram and Lakshman, who are said to have held court here during their exile. The name "Gupt Godavari," meaning "hidden Godavari," refers to a stream believed to flow underground beneath the caves, in mythical connection to the Godavari River.
Visitors walk through narrow, low-ceilinged passages, wading through shallow water in parts, to reach two natural rock formations inside that are worshipped as Ram and Lakshman's thrones. The caves are cool even in summer, which makes them a pleasant stop on a hot Chitrakoot itinerary.
Wear clothes and footwear you don't mind getting wet, and carry a torch if you're visiting outside of daylight hours, as parts of the cave interior can be dim.
