Hanuman Dhara, Chitrakoot: Legend & Visitor Guide

Perched on a hillside above Chitrakoot, Hanuman Dhara is a temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman that visitors reach by climbing a long flight of stone steps. According to local legend, after Hanuman set fire to Lanka, Ram asked him to cool himself here, and a natural spring is said to have appeared from the rock for that purpose. The spring still flows today, falling gently over the Hanuman idol inside the temple, which devotees consider a sacred and cooling blessing.

The climb takes about 20-30 minutes and rewards visitors with sweeping views over the Chitrakoot valley and the Mandakini River below. Mornings are the best time to visit, before the sun gets strong on the open steps. The site is usually combined with a visit to Kamadgiri and Ramghat, since all three are within a short drive of each other.

Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for the climb, and the temple gets busiest during the Hindu month of Sawan and around Ram Navami.
