Sati Anusuya Ashram

Set a little further out from central Chitrakoot, in forested surroundings on the banks of the Mandakini, Sati Anusuya Ashram is linked to the sage Atri and his wife Anusuya, who is said to have hosted Ram, Sita, and Lakshman here during their exile. The ashram is considered one of the calmer, less crowded stops on the Chitrakoot circuit.

According to legend, it was here that Anusuya gave Sita spiritual guidance and clothes that never wore out or got dirty, a story still told by local guides. The ashram grounds include a small temple and a peaceful stretch of riverbank that's popular for a quiet walk after the more crowded ghats and temples closer to town.

Visit in the early morning or late afternoon to enjoy the forest surroundings without the midday heat.
