Lucknow Residency
The Lucknow Residency is the ruined remains of a British colonial complex that became the site of a dramatic five-month siege during the 1857 Indian uprising. Today, the bullet-scarred walls and roofless buildings stand largely as they were left, preserved as a memorial rather than restored, which gives the site an unusually raw sense of history.
Visitors can walk through the old residency buildings, a cemetery, and a small museum that displays weapons, documents, and artefacts from the siege. Information boards around the grounds explain the events of 1857 in detail, making it a worthwhile stop for anyone interested in India's colonial and independence history rather than just architecture.
The site is spread out and mostly outdoors, so it's best visited in the cooler morning hours, and comfortable shoes are recommended for the walk between buildings.
