Chunar Fort – A Riverside Fort with Centuries of History
Chunar Fort sits on a rocky hill right next to the Ganga, about 40 km from Varanasi. It was built long ago by Maharaja Vikramaditya of Ujjain and later passed through many hands, including Sher Shah Suri, Akbar, and finally the British. Inside the fort, you can see Bhartihari's samadhi, Warren Hastings's old bungalow, an old prison, and a well known as the "Well of Love." From the top, you also get lovely views of the Ganga flowing below. It's a peaceful place that feels like stepping back into history.

History and Legacy
Chunar Fort's story stretches back over a thousand years, tied to legends of Chandrakanta and the royal families of the Vindhya region. It changed hands many times — from Humayun to Sher Shah Suri in 1540, then Akbar in 1575, followed by Awadh rulers and eventually the British. An underground tunnel is said to connect the fort to nearby Vijaygarh and Raigarh forts.
