Salkhan Fossils Park in Sonbhadra district is home to some of the oldest fossils on Earth, believed to be around 1.4 billion years old. Spread across the Kaimur hills, the park has stromatolites — ring-like patterns formed by tiny ancient algae in shallow prehistoric waters. It's not every day you get to stand on something this old, and the site is currently being considered by UNESCO for World Heritage status.

Booking and Entry Fees
A small entry fee is collected by the Forest Department. Information boards are available at the entrance to explain the fossils.
History and Legacy
Scientists have known about these fossils since the 1930s, but the park was officially set up in 2002 to protect the site from stone quarrying. During an international workshop that year, visiting geologists were impressed by how well-preserved the fossils were compared to similar sites elsewhere in the world.
