Follow the path of the Buddha across the ancient land where his teachings were born. This circuit links the great Buddhist sites of Bihar and the eastern Ganga plains — the places of enlightenment, teaching and the flowering of early Buddhism — into one profound and peaceful journey. For pilgrims, scholars and curious travellers alike, it's a chance to walk through the living history of one of the world's great spiritual traditions.

The spiritual heart of the circuit is Bodh Gaya, the most sacred site in Buddhism, where Prince Siddhartha attained enlightenment beneath the Bodhi Tree and became the Buddha. The magnificent Mahabodhi Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the descendant of that very tree draw monks and pilgrims from every Buddhist nation; the atmosphere of quiet, multinational devotion here is unforgettable.

From Bodh Gaya the journey reaches Rajgir, the ancient capital where the Buddha often taught and meditated, with its hot springs, the Griddhakuta (Vulture's Peak) and the serene Vishwa Shanti Stupa reached by ropeway. Close by is Nalanda, the ruins of the world's most famous ancient university, where thousands of monks once studied — a vast, atmospheric site that speaks to the intellectual flowering of Buddhism.

The circuit also takes in Vaishali, where the Buddha delivered his last sermon and announced his approaching parinirvana, marked by a lone Ashokan pillar, and can extend to Sarnath near Varanasi, where he preached his very first sermon and set the "wheel of dharma" in motion, and Kushinagar, where he attained final nirvana. Together these places trace the great arc of the Buddha's life and the spread of his message.

What makes this circuit so moving is the way it connects teaching to place — standing where the Buddha sat, taught and passed into nirvana turns the dharma from words into a lived landscape. The sites are peaceful and contemplative, and the presence of pilgrims from Thailand, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Japan, Tibet and beyond gives the whole journey a gentle, universal spirit.

The route is comfortably covered by road across Bihar and the eastern plains, and can be arranged to include as many of the sites as your time allows, at a reflective, unhurried pace. It suits groups, families and solo travellers, and pairs naturally with Varanasi and even Lumbini in Nepal, the Buddha's birthplace, for a fuller pilgrimage.

We arrange the entire journey for you — comfortable hotels at each stop, a clean AC vehicle with an experienced driver for the whole circuit, help understanding the significance of each site, and all transfers — so you can travel in calm and contemplation. Share your dates, group size and preferred duration, and we'll tailor the Sacred Buddhist Circuit to you and send across a personalised quote, for a pilgrimage of real depth and serenity.
