Hastinapur – Okhla Bird Sanctuary Circuit

This circuit is a treat for birdwatchers and nature lovers based in or passing through the Delhi region, linking two very different but complementary wetland-and-grassland sanctuaries — the Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary and the Okhla Bird Sanctuary. Together they offer superb birding, peaceful riverine landscapes and even a dash of Mahabharata heritage, all within easy reach of the capital.

The circuit's wild heart is the Hastinapur Wildlife Sanctuary, spread along the Ganga floodplains of western Uttar Pradesh. Its grasslands and marshes are a stronghold for the handsome swamp deer (barasingha), which gather here in herds, alongside hog deer, nilgai, wild boar and the occasional leopard. The riverine habitat is wonderful for birds — cranes, storks and great numbers of winter migrants — and the Ganga itself holds turtles and, with luck, the elusive Gangetic river dolphin. Hastinapur also carries extraordinary mythological weight as the legendary capital of the Kauravas and Pandavas in the Mahabharata, and as an important Jain pilgrimage centre with a cluster of beautiful temples, so there's rich heritage to enjoy alongside the wildlife.

The circuit's other anchor is the Okhla Bird Sanctuary, right on the Delhi–Noida border where the Yamuna is dammed to form a large wetland. In the winter months it becomes a magnet for migratory waterbirds — ducks, geese, waders and more — arriving from as far as Central Asia and Siberia to join the resident herons, egrets and kingfishers. With its well-kept paths and viewing points, it's one of the most accessible and productive birding spots in the whole Delhi–NCR area, and a favourite with photographers.

Experiencing the two together makes for a lovely, varied nature trip close to the capital — the wilder, heritage-rich grasslands of Hastinapur balanced by the accessible, bird-packed wetland of Okhla. It's an easy, low-key circuit that proves you don't need to travel deep into the wilderness to enjoy rewarding wildlife and birding; some of it sits right on Delhi's doorstep.

Winter is comfortably the best season, when the migratory birds are present in force and the weather is ideal for being outdoors. Early mornings bring the best light and the most activity, especially for photography. The sanctuaries are reached easily by road from Delhi, Noida and Meerut, making the circuit very doable as a focused trip or an add-on to a Delhi stay.
