Bhutan Tour Itinerary – Land of Happiness

Bhutan is unlike anywhere else on earth — a small Himalayan kingdom that measures its success in Gross National Happiness, guards its pristine environment and living Buddhist culture fiercely, and welcomes visitors into a world of fortress-monasteries, prayer-flag-draped passes and some of the friendliest people you'll ever meet. This tour takes you to the heart of it, through the beautiful valleys of Paro, Thimphu and Punakha.

The adventure usually begins in Paro, home to Bhutan's only international airport and its most iconic sight: the Tiger's Nest monastery (Paro Taktsang), clinging to a cliff more than 900 metres above the valley. The hike up through pine forest and fluttering prayer flags is the highlight of many a Bhutan trip, and no photograph quite prepares you for that first glimpse of the monastery in the mist. Paro also offers the magnificent Rinpung Dzong, the National Museum and a lovely, unhurried main street.

Next comes Thimphu, the world's most unusual capital — famously without a single traffic light. Here you'll find the giant golden Buddha Dordenma gazing over the valley, the impressive Tashichho Dzong, the weekend market, and the quirky takin preserve, home to Bhutan's unusual national animal. Thimphu is the best place to feel the gentle, thoughtful spirit of modern Bhutan, with its craft workshops, cosy cafes and deep Buddhist roots.

The tour then crosses the scenic Dochula Pass, lined with 108 chortens and offering Himalayan views on clear days, down into the warmer, greener Punakha valley. The jewel here is the stunning Punakha Dzong, set where two rivers meet and framed by jacaranda trees — widely regarded as the most beautiful dzong in the country. A gentle walk through rice fields to the Chimi Lhakhang fertility temple, and perhaps a thrilling crossing of one of Bhutan's long suspension bridges, round out the valley.

Together, these three valleys offer the essence of Bhutan — its most sacred sites, its grandest dzongs, its mountain scenery and its uniquely peaceful way of life. The whole country runs at a calmer, kinder pace, and travelling here feels less like ticking off sights and more like stepping into a different, gentler world.
